Athletics
Athletic Placement Process Program Policy
(Grades 7 - 12)
The Board of Regents establishes regulations governing student
eligibility for interscholastic athletic competition. Through a program
known as the Athletic Placement Process, in which Port Jefferson has
chosen to participate, school districts may use athletic eligibility
standards based on physical and emotional maturity and skill level
rather than relying solely on age as the determining factor for
eligibility. The intent of the Athletic Placement Process is to provide
safe and suitable participation at an appropriate level of competition
for pupils in grades 7-12. Only the very highly talented and highly
skilled pupils should be considered for advancement. In accordance with
the Port Jefferson Board of Education Athletic Placement Process
Policy, application for this program begins with a recommendation of the
student-athlete by the coach to the Athletic Director at least eight
(8) weeks prior to the start of the season. Seventh and eighth grade
students may be considered for the APP for individual sports, however
only eighth graders may be considered for the APP for participation in
team sports. The complete Port Jefferson Athletic Placement Policy can
be found on our website under the BOE tab of the homepage under Board
Policies. Questions regarding this policy should be directed to the
District Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics, (631) 791-4441.
