Port Jefferson Schools Host 4th Annual St. Baldrick’s Event, Surpassing $50,000 Raised for Childhood Cancer Research

The Port Jefferson Middle and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School community proudly hosted its 4th Annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation event in 2026, continuing a growing tradition of student-centered philanthropy and meaningful community engagement. The event was led by John Ruggero, high school principal,  and brought together students, staff, and families in a powerful show of unity and compassion.

This year’s initiative raised approximately $13,000 to support childhood cancer research, bringing the four-year fundraising total to an impressive $50,000. The milestone reflects the sustained dedication of the Port Jefferson school community to making a tangible difference in the lives of children and families affected by cancer.

The assembly-style event united the entire middle and high school, creating a shared experience centered on awareness, empathy, and action. A highlight of the day was the “Brave the Shave” tradition, where participants shaved their heads in solidarity with children undergoing cancer treatment. Volunteers were supported by professional stylists from the Long Island Beauty School in Hauppauge, whose continued partnership helped ensure the event’s success.

Faculty and staff played a significant role as well, with many stepping forward to shave their heads or participate as fundraisers, modeling service, leadership, and commitment for students. In an exciting expansion this year, elementary students joined the initiative for the first time. Four young participants bravely took part, further strengthening the sense of district-wide involvement and reinforcing the values of compassion and community service at every grade level.

The annual event continues to serve as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when a community comes together for a shared cause. Port Jefferson Schools remain committed to fostering empathy, leadership, and civic responsibility, ensuring that this impactful tradition will continue to grow in the years ahead.
