Posted Date: 10/28/26 (11:29 AM)

Two Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students were named semifinalists in the prestigious 72nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Seniors Deia Colosi and Avery Eisaman were selected based on their PSAT scores, exceptional academic ability and potential for achievement in collegiate-level studies.

“The District congratulates Deia and Avery on this remarkable recognition,” Port Jefferson School District Superintendent Jessica Schmettan said. “They are members of an elite group of scholars among the top percent of over a million students who took the PSAT.”

Deia and Avery now have the opportunity to continue in the competition to be considered for finalist status and a National Merit Scholarship. Approximately 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth $24 million will be awarded nationwide.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation® (NMSC) was established in 1955 and conducts the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. According to NMSC, the scholarships are underwritten by NMSC—with its own funds—and by approximately 260 business organizations, higher education institutions and individual donors that share NMSC’s mission of honoring scholastic excellence.
