Students in Edna Louise Spear Elementary School spanned the globe to learn to say hello in dozens of languages, including German, French, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish and Swahili. Christine Wicks’ and Kimberly Rambazis’ fifth grade class used speech and nonverbal actions to create social connections with each other as part of the school’s participation in the Sandy Hook Promise’s Start With Hello Week (Sept. 19–23). The students worked together, brainstorming their chosen language and creating artwork, either computer-generated or freehand. The ultimate product was a book of their creations – connecting to one another using language as the tool and communication as the process.
