With smiling faces, sharpened pencils, and new backpacks in tow, students across the Port Jefferson School District returned to classrooms on September 2, marking the official first day of the 2025-2026 academic year.

Excitement and anticipation filled the halls at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, Port Jefferson Middle School, and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School as teachers and staff welcomed students back after a summer filled with rest, exploration, and preparation. Administrators were on-site early to greet students and families, ensuring a smooth and cheerful start to the school year.

Superintendent of Schools Jessica Schmettan shared her enthusiasm, “The first day of school is always a special time. It’s a fresh start filled with energy and possibilities. We are thrilled to have our students back and are committed to providing a safe, enriching, and inspiring learning environment."

Families and community members are encouraged to stay connected with the district with regular updates, school events, and celebrations of student achievements throughout the year by downloading ParentSquare. The Port Jefferson School District looks forward to another year of academic excellence, community engagement, and student success.
