The Port Jefferson School District proudly joined schools across the nation in recognizing Unity Day, a national event dedicated to promoting kindness, acceptance, and inclusion while standing together against bullying. Throughout the district, students and staff wore orange—the official color of Unity Day—and participated in a variety of activities focused on building a positive, supportive school community.
At Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, second graders led the way with a special Unity Day assembly. Students watched an educational video explaining the purpose of Unity Day, shared original poems about peace, and engaged in discussions about how kindness takes courage and the importance of standing up to bullying. Each student took a pledge to be kind and not to bully, receiving a pledge certificate as a symbol of their commitment. The celebration concluded with a joyful sing-along of The Peace Train, reinforcing the message of unity and harmony.
Port Jefferson Middle School students and staff embraced the spirit of the day through schoolwide messaging and creative expression. Definitions of unity and kindness were displayed on TV monitors and shared during morning announcements. During lunch periods, students created “kindness chains”, adding links representing acts of compassion and inclusion within the school community.
Earl L. Vandermeulen High School also participated in the districtwide observance through schoolwide communication and engagement initiatives. Messages were sent home to families encouraging everyone to wear orange and to reflect on the importance of kindness and inclusion. Posters, bulletin boards, and a Unity Day featured on the school’s morning show highlighted the event’s purpose. The Port Jefferson School District remains dedicated to promoting empathy, acceptance, and a sense of belonging for all students on Unity Day and every day.
