The Port Jefferson School District officially launched the 2025–2026 school year with its annual Superintendent’s Conference Day on August 27 and August 28, an event that enthusiastically embraced this year’s theme: “Rooted in Excellence–Growing Together.” The event focused on professional development, wellness, and team building, bringing together faculty and staff for a meaningful, collaborative start to the new academic year.

The event began with a welcoming continental breakfast sponsored by the PTA and PTSA, setting the tone as staff reconnected after the summer break. The official program opened with inspiring remarks from Board of Education President Ellen Boehm and Superintendent of Schools Jessica Schmettan, who spoke about the district’s commitment to fostering a culture of excellence while adapting to meet the evolving needs of today’s learners. During their welcome message, Superintendent Schmettan and Board President Boehm praised the district's dedicated staff and educators for achieving high rankings in the U.S. News and World Report, and celebrated the district’s numerous successes.

Dr. Robert Neidig, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, followed with a celebratory introduction of the new staff members, highlighting the district’s excitement in welcoming fresh perspectives and new energy to the team. He also announced the Power of One recipient for the Royal Educational Fun Run, Andrew Cosci, and recognized the staff members who had achieved 25 years of service in the district. Following the districtwide kickoff, on the second day, staff members broke into their respective school buildings to review essential information, prepare for the school year, and engage in collaborative planning sessions focused on curriculum, student support, and school-specific initiatives.

In addition to these important discussions, the day also included a variety of wellness and team-building activities designed to strengthen staff morale and promote work-life balance. Participants had the opportunity to:

* Join a line dancing session for a short, fun, and active break

* Share stories about family vacations to reconnect with colleagues

* Explore board games and fidget toys that students can use in classrooms

* Participate in a hands-on baking class to foster creativity and teamwork

* Take part in a healthy walking session, encouraging movement and mindfulness

“These opportunities to connect, reflect, and grow together are what make days like this so impactful,” said Superintendent Jessica Schmettan. “ ‘Rooted in Excellence–Growing Together’ reminds us that while we are grounded in strong traditions, we are always reaching forward—both for ourselves and for our students.”

With high energy and a shared sense of purpose, the Port Jefferson School District is poised for another exceptional school year.
