Commitment and dedication to schoolwork are tops for two Port Jefferson students who were recognized by the College Board. Junior Sofia Freitas and junior Sara Freitas were among approximately 5,000 students across the nation named to the National Hispanic Recognition Program from among the more than 400,000 juniors who take the PSAT. As with the National Merit Scholarship Program, NHRP uses the junior year PSAT/NMSQT as the qualifying test.

These two academically well-prepared students are very involved in Port Jefferson’s academic and extracurricular offerings. Sara is a member of the award-winning Science Olympiad team and plays on the Royals soccer team. The sisters are both members of the high school’s Environmental Club, Interact Club and Investment Club. Encouraged by high school science teacher and STEM adviser Jonathan Maletta, they both also attended Stony Brook University’s I-STEM programs for Cancer Biology and The Marine Science and Sustainability Workshop Series.
