Royal Readers Night at Vandermeulen High School featured a wide array of reading activities.

The Port Jefferson School District recently held its first-ever Royal Readers Night, celebrating the District’s strong culture of literacy. The event, hosted by Port Jefferson Middle School and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students, was held in the schools’ shared library and welcomed K-12 students and their families for an evening filled with reading-focused activities.

The event, led by Edna Louise Spear Elementary librarian Meg Hoon and 6-12 Library Media Specialist Eva Grasso, included performances in the Readers’ Theater, read alouds, audiobook listening, and visits from local bookstores and authors. Students also had the opportunity to write poetry, redesign book covers, create graphic novels, and design bookmarks and tote bags. For those seeking a quieter experience, the Readers’ Lounge offered a relaxing space to simply enjoy a good book.

“Royal Readers Night was a major success in continuing to promote the joy of reading throughout the Port Jefferson community,” said Port Jefferson Superintendent of Schools Jessica Schmettan. “I want to thank all of the staff, students, and families who helped make the night a success.”
