Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students in Mr. Michael Maletta’s health class are learning crucial life skills and developing their understanding of their roles in society. In a recent class, students shared their fears of tangible things such as bugs and broken glass and had a more open discussion on anxieties associated with getting bad grades, fear of the future and understanding expectations of themselves and their teachers to forge successful academic relationships. Mr. Maletta encouraged the students to expand their communication skills with others as a first step to alleviating some of the trepidation they may feel.
“Sometimes we don’t have to be afraid,” Mr. Maletta said, stressing the importance of communication in those critical moments.
Other topics covered during the school year are nutrition, relationships, dating/dating violence, body changes/puberty, HIV/AIDS, alcohol use, and signs of suicide and its prevention.
